2019/ WHY ARE YOUNG ADULTS SKIPPING VIVID?
... and how to get the shy bastards talking about it.
About the Project:
We were tasked with analysing Vivid Light Festival, and identifying and documenting the pain points of its customers. Then, we designed a solution to rectify a pain point of our choice.
Tools:

User Research
User Journey Mapping (Past, Assumptive and Future State)
Video Prototyping

Stage 1: Discover

Forgoing the mundane interview, we ran 4 context mapping sessions with 10 participants in the 18-23 age range.

Prior to attending the session, participants were asked to complete a set of sensitising exercises. They were supplied with a booklet that contained simplified context mapping exercises, ranking questions and short-response prompts.

The exercises were supplied a week in advance so the participants to begin to recall their experience at the festival, and practice expressing their opinions at their own pace.

This increase the confidence of participants going into the sessions and provided a stepping stone to the context mapping learning curve.

During the session, participants were supplied with a blank timeline and were asked to document their experience at the festival end-to-end, using a set of icons.

Following this, they were presented with a dual-axis plane and a set of 100 stock images. The images acted as prompts, allowing the participants to confidently express themselves without the fear of being 'put on the spot'.
Each participant then explained the intention behind each icon and image and its significance to their experience, facilitating an organic interview.
Stage 2: Define

The results were then affinity mapped, and 12 distinct pain points were identified:

Stage 3: Design

After developing an understanding of the problem space, the team brainstormed potential tools that will elevate the level of engagement in visitors and relieve some of the pain points we discovered.

These ideas were screened and critiqued by industry professionals such as UX designers from IBM, Vivd Artists, gallery curators at the Maritime Museum, a former Google intern and a PhD student at the University of Sydney.

We were asked to communicate our concept through a video prototype. The below video was scripted, directed and acted out by me, with filming and animation by my project partner, Nicholas Ho.
To communicate all the touchpoints of our experience throughout the festival, I constructed an assumptive journey map. This acted as the first stage of preparation for user testing. Unfortunately, we were not able to test our final concept on users due to the project coming to an end. (Click the image to enlarge)
